What Do I Mean By The Term Posture?
Posture essentially refers to the way your muscles, bones, and skeletal structure holds up and supports your body. When your skeletal system and muscles are functioning optimally, this will go a long way towards promoting proper posture within your body. When your body is aligned correctly, your body will be able to function optimally. Your muscles will also have to work less hard if you are in proper positioning.
Now that we’ve gone over what posture basically means, let’s go into more of the negative implications of what happens when your posture isn’t what it should be.
How Lacking Proper Posture Negatively Impacts Your Health
Bad posture negatively impacts your health in a number of ways. Let me discuss them with you briefly.
Your breathing can be negatively impacted
It’s true! When you are hunched over, your diaphragm cannot function as well to bring air in and out of your body. You can try the following on yourself if you don’t believe me.
While you are upright in good posture right now, take a deep breath. Now, bend forward and try to take a deep breath. Much more difficult to get air into your body now, right?
Your emotional state can be negatively impacted
Indeed, this is true as well! When you are slouched over, you certainly aren’t going to feel as good about yourself as when you are walking tall and upright.
You can also test this out on yourself if you don’t believe me. Go into a hunched shoulder position with your head down and walk around like that for a bit. It makes you feel worse, doesn’t it? Now, walk around with your head upright and tall. You will feel much better!
You are more likely to get muscle and joint pain
Your body is like a chain with attached parts. Your legs attach to your pelvis, which attaches to your spine, which attaches to your head.
Essentially, what I’m trying to get at is if something is going wrong at one part of your body, the other parts can be affected as well.
For example, if your head is too far forward, it can bring your Thoracic spine into more of a forward curve. This can put you into more of a hunched over position. This is a bad position to be in because your back muscles are going to be much more strained as they will have to work harder to hold your body upright.
Not only that, but when your head is in that forward position, your neck is going to be under considerably more stress. This can cause issues like joint pain, muscle pain, and headaches.
As another example that relates to me personally, when your feet are out of alignment, that can indeed affect your posture.
Pertaining to me, when your feet are flat, your whole body up above can potentially be impacted!
For example, when your feet are flat, your arches collapse down. Then your shin bones rotate inwards. Your knees can then go into a collapsed position, which places extra stress on them. Then your femurs rotate in. Your pelvis will then go into an anterior, or forward tilt. That drags your spine along with it and leads to compression and lower back pain. You can then go into more thoracic kyphosis and finally, forward head posture.
So your feet being a weak link in your body can indeed affect every other link!
In Summation Of Why Having Good Posture Is Important
Good posture is important because it makes you breathe better, feel better, and is healthier for your body!
When you are hunched over, it is more difficult to get air into your lungs.
When you are hunched over, you feel generally more miserable.
When you are hunched over, extra stress is placed on the joints and muscles in your body.
So essentially, being in proper posture can help to correct these issues and improve your overall well-being and health!
