A Memory Foam Neck Pillow Helps You Sleep Better & Feel Better
I bet right now, you are sitting there gazing at this memory foam neck pillow article and thinking…
“WHOOP DEE DO, A Memory Foam Neck Pillow! It’s just a PILLOW! Can it REALLY help THAT much? Get out of here, DUDE!”
But I’m telling you, it is a GREAT pillow! Not only for comfort reasons, but for sleep position reasons as well.
You see, the position you sleep in can have a major impact on your life and how you feel.
Because you see, you sleep for hours a night. Therefore, the POSITION you sleep in is important. Let me explain further…
How Sleeping In A Bad Position Affects Your Body
Optimally when you sleep, your Cervical spine, or the spine at your neck, should be straight.
If you can keep your Cervical spine properly aligned when you sleep, you will experience little issues.
HOWEVER, many people do not sleep in a good position. They may sleep with their head too far up, too far down, or bent to the side.
A big issue with many flat, ordinary pillows is that they leave a space between your neck and the pillow itself. When this happens, you aren’t being properly supported and your head can side bend to that side.
This is where problems can arise. With your head side bent to one side, you can develop muscle imbalances. This can happen because one side is being shortened, while the other side is lengthened. When this position is held for hours at a time, certain muscles in your cervical region can begin to cause problems.
Muscles Affected From Sleeping With Your Neck Unsupported
Let’s continue with what can happen to you from sleeping with your head side bent for long periods of time due to your neck being unsupported.
When you are in a bad position, like in the one above, certain muscles on one side of your neck can become tight, while the other side becomes overstretched.
In particular, on the side your head is bending, muscles that work to side bend your head to that side will become tight.
One of these muscles that works to side bend your head to the same side is your Trapezius muscle.
The Trapezius Muscle Is Affected From Sleeping In A Poor Position
To be specific, the upper part of this muscle works to side bend your head to the same side.
When the Trapezius muscle is chronically shortened, it can cause symptoms like shoulder pain, neck pain, and tension headaches.
The Levator Scapulae Muscle Is Affected From Sleeping In A Poor Position
Like your Upper Traps, the Levator Scapulae also side bends your head to one side. When this muscle is tight, it can cause similar issues to what a tight Trapezius muscle causes.
The Scalene Muscles Are Affected From Sleeping In A Poor Position
Like the muscles already mentioned, your Scalene muscles side bend your head as well.
The issue with having tight Scalenes is that they can cause nerve entrapment.
You see, you have a bundle of nerves coming out of your neck. This nerve bundle is called the Brachial Plexus.
Due to a bad sleeping position, tight Scalenes can then cause the Brachial Plexus to be pressed upon. This can then cause PAIN all the way down your arm. Nerve pain is quite unpleasant, as it can cause a burning, electric sensation along its pathway.
As you can tell by now, sleeping in a bad position has MANY consequences. From simply sleeping in a bad position for hours each day, you can develop significant pain in your back, neck, shoulders, and nerve pain as well.
NOW, let’s talk about how a memory foam neck pillow can SAVE your body!
Why The Memory Foam Neck Pillow Is Amazing
So by now you are probably thinking, “OKAY, I GET IT! SO HOW CAN THIS MEMORY FOAM NECK PILLOW HELP ME!?”
Well…although this pillow may not appear that much different from a regular pillow, it is different in one crucial way.
The difference between this memory foam neck pillow and a normal pillow is subtle, but critical!
Do you see how the left side is HIGHER than the right side? This contour on the memory foam pillow makes all the difference!
Remember how I said in the beginning of this article that if there is a space between your neck and the pillow that your head will tend to droop downwards? This happening over long periods of time can create all the bad muscle imbalances I mentioned.
Because this memory foam neck pillow has that high contour though, it can ADEQUATELY SUPPORT YOUR NECK, SO THAT THE SPACE BETWEEN YOUR NECK AND THE PILLOW IS FILLED!
Do you see how when I hold the pillow up to my head, that the bottom of the pillow is larger than the top. This greater size at the bottom is there to provide support to your neck and keep your head from drooping.
This is the MAJOR reason why I recommend getting the memory foam neck pillow for yourself.
