Uneven Abs Are Fixable, To An Extent
It really depends on what you mean by your abs being uneven. Some people have staggered, asymmetrical abs. This is where their abs don’t line up and are not evenly arranged. Individuals with asymmetrical abs did nothing to cause it, it is simply how they were born. Other people have uneven abs due to them having too much fat deposits covering their lower abs. In this case, one can appear to have uneven abs due to the upper abs revealing themselves more. Uneven abs can also be caused by one working out their upper abs more than their lower abs. Due to this, it can look like one has uneven abs due to their upper abs popping out more in comparison to their lower abs.
So now, let’s talk in more detail about how each of the above things that cause uneven abs can be addressed.
How To Fix Asymmetrical, Uneven Abs Due To Genetics
Some people are genetically blessed in this world. Whether they have the muscles of Zeus or the stature of a Skyscraper, certain people have simply been gifted with good genes. The same thing can be said when it comes to abs.
As you can see, the guy below has been handed amazing genetics. His abs line up perfectly.
Some people, however, are not as lucky. No matter how much they try, their abs just don’t line up. Although they may still look good, they have been cursed genetically with uneven abs. For example, with the guy below, it is obvious that he has staggered, asymmetrical abs.
In the case of his uneven abs, he will never be able to get them to line up symmetrically.
If you have a six pack that is fully showing and it is asymmetrical, about the only thing you can do is…..
PLASTIC SURGERY
Yep, outside of drastic measures, you are pretty much stuck with the abs you were given.
Awww, don’t cry! Having uneven abs is not the end of the world. I am sure you have plenty of things going for you!
But, perhaps your uneven abs are being caused by other things. Let’s address what those other things could be.
How To Fix Uneven Abs Due To Your Upper Abs Popping Out More Than Your Lower Abs
Perhaps your body fat is low enough for you to have a six pack, but it still does not look quite right. This could very well be due to your upper abs being more developed than your lower abs.
Many people in the gym do crunches for their abs. (I actually just wrote an article on why ab crunches are better on a Pilates Ball).
Crunches, however, mainly target your upper abs. With crunches you are not so much targeting your lower abs. So if one does many crunches in the gym and their body fat is low enough to reveal a 6 pack, their upper abs can appear bigger than their lower ones.
In order to fix this, you need to do some lower abdominal exercises to make them pop more.
Here is a key thing to remember! To workout your upper abs, you bring your shoulders to your hips. To workout your lower abs, you bring your hips to your shoulders. So now, you are probably wondering what a good exercise is to target your lower abs, huh? Well, let me give you one!

A great exercise you can do for your lower abs are leg raises. As you can see, the woman in the picture below is bringing her legs up and lifting her butt off the ground. You can even go a bit further than she is going. Just be sure you are not in pain while doing this exercise. You lift your legs off of the ground, then bring your hips up in the direction of your shoulders, then come back down. This exercise will really burn your lower abs! Just make sure you have good form and your lower back is not arching up as your legs are lowering.
By doing the above exercises, you can balance out uneven abs by making them pop out evenly. That is, however, under the condition that your body fat is low enough. This brings us into a third reason why it can appear that you have uneven abs.
How To Fix Uneven Abs Due To Fat Deposits Covering Your Lower Abs
Perhaps your body fat levels are low enough such that your upper abs are showing, but not your lower abs. Unfortunately, the region where our lower abs are is one of the first places where our bodies store fat. So while your body fat levels may be low enough where your upper abs are showing, they may not be quite low enough where your lower abs reveal themselves as well.
In order for your lower abs to reveal themselves, you are going to need to be EXTREMELY diligent regarding your diet and exercise routine. You will need to be laser focused on where you can improve and to actually take the actions that will allow you to achieve visible lower abs.
What you are going to want to do is to workout to build more overall muscle mass. Because muscle burns more calories than fat, this will make your job of staying lean easier. In fact, I wrote a great article on how you can build muscle. I highly recommend you check it out as I put a ton of great information in there.
Regarding your diet, you are going to want to know your baseline calorie intake, as that will give you a starting point to work from. Let’s say for example you take in 3,000 calories a day. Knowing this, you can eat differently to eliminate, let’s say, 250 calories a day. If there is 3,500 calories in a pound, you will lose around half a pound a week. This will add up over time and give you the results you are looking for. Eventually, that lower ab fat will be stripped away and turn your uneven abs into something more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. People won’t be able to do anything but admire you!
So, there you have it. I told you three ways of how uneven abs occur and how to correct them. I hope you found this advice useful!
